STATE OF MANUFACTURING
- Manufacturing contracted in November as the PMI registered 36.2 percent, more than 2 percentage points lower than October's PMI. This is the lowest reading since May 1982. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting. A PMI in excess of 41.1. percent, over a period of time, generallly indicates an expansion in the overall economy. Therefore, the PMI indicates contraction in both the overall economy and the manufacturing sector.
- Real earnings for factory workers increased in October. This increase stemmed from an 0.3 percent increase in average hourly earnings, combined with a 1.2 percent decrease in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W)
- Industrial production increased 1.3 percent in October after a downwardly revised decline of 3.7 percent in September. The revision to September output resulted, in part, from a larger estimate of the impact of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike on the chemical industry. At 107.3 percent of its 2002 average, total industrial production in October was 4.1 percent below its level of a year earlier.
- New Orders for manufactured goods in October, down three consecutive months, decreased by $21.9 billion or 5.1 percent. This followed a 3.1 percent September decrease. Since reaching a high of $463 billion in July 2008, new orders have declined by more than $55 billion, or 12 percent.
- Shipments of manufactured goods declined by $13.8 billion, or 3.2 percent in October. This is the lowest level for this series since April 2007. Over the year, shipments have fallen by nearly $10 billion, or 2.3 percent.
